What would you recommend to the person who commented about an elder who thought the building was on fire? I agree that embracing their reality is preferable when they are waiting for something or someone once or repeatedly. If it is harmless and will make them happy or content. But how do you frame it when there is fear, panic, or anxiety involved in what they see as danger? Fight or Flight?do we really want to legitimize that? Nursing home staff don’t have time to play fire drills or “evacuate” with one person.

Hi Karen! I actually talk about exactly this thing on the video in my blog post here: https://rachaelwonderlin.com/2019/04/23/lying-withimage/ – short answer: solve the emotional problem. I had a resident hallucinating there was fire so I pulled up a fire truck noise on my phone and played it. I told her we were safe because the fire trucks were coming. When she felt safe, she calmed down immediately.
