My mom is 85, has vascular dementia, also on a statin, bp med, and low dose Keppra. She is tired often but for the last few days won’t get out of bed and stays in her pjs. She often says she doesn’t feel good but can’t tell us what hurts, just that she is tired. She gets up and eats breakfast or some light lunch but then says she wants to go back to bed. When she gets up she seems ok, not like she is feeling sick. I feel like she’s giving up. What do we do?

Sounds like she has some depression, which often goes hand-in-hand with dementia. Could be a good idea to speak to your physician about some depression medication, as we do want to make sure we treat depression in dementia. The other thing I would recommend is making a daily plan for her: have things to do, places to go, people to see. She probably doesn’t have a reason for getting out of bed, so she feels depressed, and goes back to sleep. Ask her “for her help” to finish household projects and get her engaged in chores and other things to “assist” you.
